Zig Zag is the perfect name for this tree.
There’s no better way to welcome spring than stumbling upon a stand of flowering Redbud during a crisp morning walk. I love seeing these trees in bloom! Magenta buds open to clusters of lavender-pink flowers that appear to be popping out of the bark as they wrap around bare branches before heart-shaped leaves appear.
There have been several new introductions made in the past few years, but nothing quite as distinguishable as Zig Zag™. Every branch from trunk to tip has a distinct zig-zag pattern that sets this variety apart from all others.
A favorite understory tree, growing under the canopy of hardwoods and pines, eastern Redbud has an extensive native range stretching as far north as Ontario and west to Oklahoma, all along the eastern seaboard, and south to Texas. A relatively small tree, ideal for residential spaces, Zig Zag will make an outstanding specimen where its unique, architectural look can be showcased. And, as an extra bonus, it will serve as an excellent source for early pollen and nectar for bees!
